The forum heading “Politics, Religion, Philosophy, and Science” is missing something, namely “Business”.

Why “business”? An example would be Consumerism, which is a belief-system unto itself, one that is cherished by billions. But it is also the most destructive belief-system on this planet, a thousand times more destructive than any war, or natural disaster, save the planet being struck by giant meteorites and comets.

Advertising is inextricably linked to business, and perhaps should be included.

People, the media and politicians are wont to refer to the damage done by Consumerism as “progress”. This is as evil a belief as the denial of Evolution by Christian neo-cons who want Creationism taught in US schools.

As Sam Harris has often said, Atheism is a wiping away of old ideas in order to facilitate having meaningful dialogue (I’m paraphrasing here). Part of that dialogue must necessarily include how we’re living in the present day and what we’re doing to this planet.

I’m not sure if Politics should be included as well, but modern big-business, politics and advertising have such an incestuous relationship that it’s hard to say where one ends and the next begins. In Canada right now the Harper Conservatives and the BC Liberals are trying to make it illegal for people to stand in the way of business interests, especially where there are environmental concerns. This is an example of Consumerism becoming Consumer-Fascism, which is the next logical step. Consumer practices are literally getting away with murder right now. Entrenching Consumerism in our legal machinery, though a blatant conflict of interest, is the way things are headed.

So, how about it? “Business, Advertising and Politics” as a new sub-heading?

Does anyone know why the post formatting functions do not show up in the finished post? I can’t make spaces between paras appear or the Bold, Italics and Underline funtions either. They show up in the draft, or rather the code for them does, but not in the final preview or the actual post. I’ve noticed this on many other posts I was glancing through in various threads.

Hi all,

After being pointed to Sam Harris’ essay on “Killing the Buddha” on the Shambhala Sun website ( http://www.shambhalasun.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=2903Itemid=247 ), I was rather surprised to wander in here and not see a forum discussing Buddhism, or—much more importantly—the teachings and ideas of the man we call “the Buddha”.

Might it be possible to open a “Buddhism” forum here….?

Thx

Why was the ‘How can you derive an “ought” from an “is”’ page in the FAQ section of the site taken down? Was it a matter of relevance? Was Sam not happy with what he wrote?

I remember there being some interesting discussions in the comments section, and it would be a shame if they’ve all just been deleted. It might be good to have a small notice on the FAQ page acknowledging its absence.

And there was another one entitled, ‘But What if Beating Children is Actually Good?’ Maybe an archive section of some sort is needed, but don’t strike things from the record.
