Guatamalan peasant whose daughter was one of thousands who were raped, tortured, murdered and ‘disappeared’ by U.S. backed military:  “Can it really all be forgotten?”

Lauri Anderson replies: “Wouldn’t be the first time.”

From the lips of our president spoken May 21, 2009:

I have opposed the creation of such a Commission [Yeah!] because I believe that our existing democratic institutions are strong enough to deliver accountability. The Congress can review abuses of our values, and there are ongoing inquiries by the Congress into matters like enhanced interrogation techniques. The Department of Justice and our courts can work through and punish any violations of our laws.

RE: Eric Holder

Four knowledgeable sources tell NEWSWEEK that he is now leaning toward appointing a prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration’s brutal interrogation practices, something the president has been reluctant to do. While no final decision has been made, an announcement could come in a matter of weeks, say these sources, who decline to be identified discussing a sensitive law-enforcement matter. Such a decision would roil the country, would likely plunge Washington into a new round of partisan warfare, and could even imperil Obama’s domestic priorities, including health care and energy reform. Holder knows all this, and he has been wrestling with the question for months. “I hope that whatever decision I make would not have a negative impact on the president’s agenda,” he says. “But that can’t be a part of my decision.”

What Would (a) Dick Do?

Former VP Dick Cheney appears ready to ratchet up the stakes of his opposition to the Obama administration.

He said Sunday he might not cooperate with new U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s probe into possible abuses by the Bush administration.

Cheney told FOX News he might refuse to talk to a special prosecutor looking into the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques earlier this decade.

Cheney is playing to the conservative crowd, but he also appears to be saying he will decide whether he’s above the law or not.

“It will depend on the circumstances and what I
think their activities are really involved in.
I’ve been very outspoken in my views on this matter.”

In Dick’s parallel universe “outspoken” is synonymous with “above the law”.

Has Cheney ever commented on the danger to U.S. military personel caused by the CIA getting the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld go-ahead to torture prisoners?  If we saw photos of U.S. POW’s being treated like the Abu Graib prisoners, what would be the reaction of all the Bush/Cheney supporters?  I suspect the American public would demand a terrible revenge against the ‘degenerates’ who perpetrated such war crimes.
