Most interesting were the parts about social attachments and empathy in regards to how brain signals light up when we see pain or suffering in others. An example of the first is the stories about the two former polygamous wives who broke free of the Mormon cult. They were taught from day one that if they aren’t obedient and submissive, they’d lose their salvation and be cast into hell. Of course, that’s true of basic Christianity as well, but it’s a good illustration. You continue to believe because it’s in your best interest, or so you think.
The latter is how the image of Christ on the cross causes the empathy of suffering and creates guilt in followers if they don’t accept Christ’s gift of eternal life.
