Well worth the hour of your life and very palatable for non-scientists.

Andy seems to be a bright man but he is completey wrong here.

People believe in God(s) because the bible tells them too.

Why overcomplicate this.  wink

While I understand the humor in the short answer “bible/gawd” I think Thomson really did some good work in his analysis of cognitive functions.

Absolutely!

It’s great stuff.

I actually have not listened to it yet as I have not had the time, but I will try tonight.

Sounds interesting from Jefe’s comments.

Most interesting were the parts about social attachments and empathy in regards to how brain signals light up when we see pain or suffering in others. An example of the first is the stories about the two former polygamous wives who broke free of the Mormon cult. They were taught from day one that if they aren’t obedient and submissive, they’d lose their salvation and be cast into hell. Of course, that’s true of basic Christianity as well, but it’s a good illustration. You continue to believe because it’s in your best interest, or so you think.

The latter is how the image of Christ on the cross causes the empathy of suffering and creates guilt in followers if they don’t accept Christ’s gift of eternal life.

Good presentation.

He made a statement towards the end that was something close to this…‘It’s cognitively more difficult to reach unbelief’

I have said this to several believers here, saying that they were ‘intellectually lazy’ and ‘intellectual cowards’ I agree with Dr. Thomson in that the atheistic worldview has to be studied and learned. Creationists want the ideas and answers handed to them through tradition (dogma)and not learned through critical thinking and skepticism.

This they must come to understand and accept.
