There are many instances in the Old Testament (Tanakh) where gross violations of the Geneva Convention occurred. In fact the war crimes of David and Joshua exceed the criminal behavior of Saddam Hussein and Slobodan Milosevic. “Another day and another time,” you say. “An omniscient, omnipotent, never changing god who supposedly defines moral behavior,” I say. Furthermore those who argue, “another place and another time,” seem to be acknowledging that the Old Testament (Tanakh) is the work of men and a compilation of myth. That is fine in my opinion but then the Old Testament (Tanakh) becomes a very different book than would be one that is divine direction and an inspiration for living out one’s existence. There are many examples in the Old Testament (Tanakh) to back up this assertion but the following sadistic behaviors are more than sufficient to prove my point.
“Genesis 34:1-31. Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, is “defiled” by a man who seems to love her dearly. Her brothers trick all of the men of the town and kill them (after first having them all circumcised), and then take their wives and children captive.” So Dinah’s brothers massacred all of the men in the town when they were recovering from what would be considered surgery. Killing men in their hospital beds and placing the remaining population in internment camps.
“Exodus 32:27-28 God orders the sons of Levi (Moses, Aaron, and the other members of their tribe that were “on the Lord’s side”) to kill “every man his neighbor.” “And there fell of the people that day about 3000 men.” So for the “crime” of building a golden statue the equivalent of a town’s population is executed.
“1 Samuel 18:25-27 David kills 200 Philistines and brings their foreskins to Saul to buy his first wife (Saul’s daughter Michal). Saul had only asked for 100 foreskins, but David was feeling generous.” Mutilation of the dead.
“Judges 20:37 The Israelites killed everyone in the city with the edge of the sword.
20:48 The Israelites finish their massacre of the Benjamites by killing all the men, animals, and everything they could find in every Benjamite city. Then they burned the cities to the ground.” Massacring all of the civilians in every city combined with destruction of all structures.
“1 Samuel 15:2-3 God orders Saul to kill all of the Amalekites: men, women, infants, sucklings, ox, sheep, camels, and asses.” Massacre the sequel.
“2 Samuel 4:6-7 Some of David’s men kill Saul’s son (by smiting him under the fifth rib, of course) and bring his head to David, thinking that he’ll be pleased. But he wasn’t. David has the assassins killed, their hands and feet chopped off, and their bodies hung up (for decorations?) over the pool in Hebron.” Mutilating the dead again.
“2 Samuel 5:8 Whoever kills the lame and the blind will be David’s “chief and captain.” Massacring handicapped civilians results in a promotion. Rewarding eugenics.
