I think Kaku is referring to the human race, not immortality in the individual sense.  Yes, man’s goal is to become like a mythical god and science is the only way to even come close to that.  We already landed on the moon.  No ancient prophet even did that.  Wishful thinking and chanting will not make your myth a reality no matter how hard you try.

I don’t think evolution needs a goal.  It just functions, adapts, morphs, mutates, etc.  We don’t need mystical goals or explanations.

I would add, that any religion, by definition of being a religion, never provides evidence.  Religion is believing based on faith and the lack of evidence.  Since the scientific age, all beliefs should be based on scientific reasoning and evidence.  There is no reason to rely on faith.
