We can sleep better at night knowing that slavery, stoning, raping, child abuse, etc…sanctioned in the Bible, is best explained by the religious spiritual evolution that must be a part of God’s plan and that Rabbi Wolpe is so fervently convinced of.

Perhaps we can excuse the ignorance of our ancestors but how do we excuse the ignorance of an all-knowing god? 

Maybe he was simply asleep at the wheel for 4000 or more years— Or maybe he still is.

And if we are made in his image why does it take us so long to “catch on”?  Is God just a stupid, dense God, and we are a reflection of that?  What irritates me most about the Wolpes of the world is their own smugness in trying to convince the rest of us (the sheep?) of their correct version and vision of God.  Then everyone can choose their favorite story and rendition of what they want to believe.  Religion is a kind of orgy of beliefs.  Just grab the one that appeals to you and hang on for a joy ride. If you’re lucky it will take you to heaven.  If that one doesn’t work for you, seek out a different one. The beauty of people like Harris (in that debate) is he can nail Wolpe in an instant, and the best part is when he does it with humor.  His Elvis analogy was spot on, and it appeared that even Wolpe understood it and couldn’t counter it with anything of substance.
