Ellison put out the common distortion of Quran 5:32 - 33 by leaving out the beginning of Q 5:32. That’s the distortion of Q 5:32 we’ve all heard that : “If any one slew a person ... it would be as if he slew the whole world…” to claim that Islam so peaceful and life loving. Even Useful idiot President Bush used it when he hosted a Ramadan dinner in 2005. But that part of Q 5:32 is a rip-off the Talmud.
The beginning of Q 5:32 is always left out by Muslims since it indicates that this admonishment is addressed only to the Jews. The Talmud is quoted in mockery. Qur’an 5:32-33 is really warning the Jews to behave or else (5:33) they can be tortured and killed. Check it out: http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/quran/005.qmt.html
Furthermore, the “There is no compulsion in religion” quote from the Qur’an, even if not abrogated by the “verse of the sword” (Q 9:5), just means that infidel Christians or Jews need not be killed if they reject Islam, but then they must pay protection money not be killed and live as humiliated subjects per Qur’an 9:29.

I hope Dr. Sam Harris is aware of this by now.
