It would appear that Sam Harris shares my viewpoint on this matter, not yours.

There is a form of well-being that supersedes all others, indeed, that transcends the vagaries of experiences itself. I will use “spirituality” and “mysticism” interchangeably here, because there are no alternatives.

I have read it.
I don’t remember anything about him saying that people can choose happiness.

I was raised a theist (Russian Orthodox Christian) so I’ll go first:  I was a theist because my parents brought me up with the belief

The length of time called “day” is relevant only on the planet earth.
There would be no way of telling how long it took to make a universe in which days did not exist.

Because they were born to theists.
