There’s a thread on the richarddawkins.net forum called ‘Songs that criticise religion’. http://richarddawkins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=55841

The guy that started it off doesn’t seem to have posted here. I hope he doesn’t mind me posting on his behalf. He provided a free song, a free game, and a video clip. The song and the game are real gems - protests against religious indoctrination of kids. Give the game to your kids.

I like Phil Ochs’ Canons of Christianity, I thinks its on Youtube, but here are the lyrics:

Christian cannons have fired at my days
With the warning beneath the holy blaze
And bow to our authority
Say the cannons of christianity

Oh the children will be sent to schools
Minds of clay are molded to their rules
Learn to fear all of eternity
Warn the cannons of christianity

Holy hands will count the money raised
Like a king the lord is richly praised
On a cross of diamond majesty
Say the cannons of christianity

Missionaries will travel on crusades
The word is given, the heathen souls are saved
Conversions to our morality
Sigh the cannons of christianity

Come the wars and turn the rules around
To bend your soul on the battle ground
And the lord will march beside me
Drone the cannons of christianity

Cathedral walls will glitter with their gold
And the sermons speak through silver robes
Building castles amidst the poverty
Say the cannons of christianity

Worship now and wash your sins away
Drop the coins, fall to your knees and pray
Cleanse the world of all hypocrisy
Smile the cannons of christianity

Christian cannons have fired at my days
With the warning beneath the holy blaze
And bow to our authority
Say the cannons of christianity

What else? What else? What else?

Oh yeah! The preacher and the slave by Joe Hill!

Try Jethro Tull’s “MY GOD”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dh0woT7NkKI

Oh people - what have you done -
locked Him in His golden cage.
Made Him bend to your religion -
Him resurrected from the grave.
He is the god of nothing -
if that’s all that you can see.
You are the god of everything
He’s inside you and me.
So lean upon Him gently
and don’t call on Him to save you
from your social graces
and the sins you used waive.
The bloody Church of England -
in chains of history -
requests your earthly presence at
the vicarage for tea.
And the graven image you - know - who -
with His plastic crucifix -
he’s got him fixed -
confuses me as to who and where and why -
as to how he gets his kicks.
Confessing to the endless sin -
the endless whining sounds.
You’ll be praying till next Thursday to
all the gods that you can count.

Susan Werner recently released an album “The Gospel Truth” in which nearly every song pokes fun at or criticizes religion.

One of my favorite songs of all time which mock religion is The Vatican Rag by Tom Lerher.

Click the link above to see him perform the song in a YouTube video.  His brief introduction is followed by the song’s lyrics below:

“Another big news story of year concerned the ecumenical council in Rome, known as Vatican II. Among the things they did in an attempt to make the church more commercial was to introduce the vernacular into portions of the mass, to replace Latin, and to widen somewhat the range of music permissible in the liturgy, but I feel that if they really want to sell the product, in this secular age, what they ought to do is to redo some of the liturgical music in popular song forms. I have a modest example here. It’s called The Vatican Rag.”

First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Do whatever steps you want, if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff.
Everybody say his own
Kyrie eleison,
Doin’ the Vatican Rag.

Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who’s got religion’ll
Tell you if your sin’s original.
If it is, try playin’ it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!

So get down upon your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman,
Ave Maria,
Gee it’s good to see ya,
Gettin’ ecstatic an’
Sorta dramatic an’
Doin’ the Vatican Rag!

Rab, how did I completely miss your previous reply which included the link to Lerher’s Vatican Rag?  Moderator Mojo?  If not, my bad.  Still, great choice for this thread.  I’m glad someone beat me to it because it belongs here.

I posted this at RDF also.

God
in “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band [Mobile Fidelity]” by John Lennon

God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I’ll say it again
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain

I don’t believe in magic
I don’t believe in I-Ching
I don’t believe in Bible
I don’t believe in tarot
I don’t believe in Hitler
I don’t believe in Jesus
I don’t believe in Kennedy
I don’t believe in Buddha
I don’t believe in mantra
I don’t believe in Gita
I don’t believe in yoga
I don’t believe in kings
I don’t believe in Elvis
I don’t believe in Zimmerman
I don’t believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that’s reality

The dream is over
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday
I was the dreamweaver
But now I’m reborn
I was the Walrus
But now I’m John
And so dear friends
You just have to carry on
The dream is over

Nice pick there Beamer. It’s one of my favorites too… I recall my mom getting mad at my dad for playing “God” on a roadtrip!
My hubby’s contribution, Jefferson Airplane’s (Grace Slick’s) Easter? :

Golden velvet robes on Pope Paul, he’s talking—he’s stalking devils of
flesh. Rides through the streets instead of walking. I think his holy story
is a mess. All I did last Easter all I did was paint some eggs. It was a
resurrection holy day—no more nails in the holy legs. Only one true holy
book in your hand. Singing in latin nobody understands. Licking wafers
paper thin.

Ah, stupid christian isn’t it grand? Is that your reason for this day? Do
you have a little something holy you’d like to say? Something about a magic,
sacred, holy day. You look holy and humble on your knees, but it looks
funny when you run that way. Pope Paul taking all your money for turning
your feet into clay (pigeon).

One man of peace dies, and a hundred wars begin. You keep murdering
people in his christian name—I thought he said—I thought he said that was
a sin. Soldier where have you been? What is your reason for this day? Do you
have a little something holy you’d like to say to me? Something about a
magic, sacred, holiday. All I’m going to do this easter—I’m just going to
look for eggs. It’s a resurrection holy day—no more nails in the holy legs. No
more brains in the christian.

My pick is… you guessed it, Nine Inch Nail’s “God Given”:

Hey man, please don’t make a sound.
Take a look around.
Can’t you see what’s right in front of you?
Have a little taste.
No more time to waste.
You don’t want to get left behind ‘cause it’s all comin’ down right now.
How hard is it to see?
Put your faith in me.
I sure wouldn’t want to be
Prayin’ to the wrong piece of wood.
You should get where you belong.
Everything you know is wrong.
Come on, sing along. Everybody now.

God Given.

And He gives us sight.
And we see the light.
And it burns so bright.
Now we know we’re right.
And His kingdom come.
And Thy will be done.
We have just begun.
We’re the chosen ones.

I would never tell you anything that wasn’t absolutely true,
That didn’t come right from His mouth,
And He wants me to tell you.

Wait, step into the light.
How can this be right?
I’m afraid we’re gonna ask you to leave.
I guess you cannot win with the color of your skin.
You won’t be getting into the Promised Land.
This just another case: you people still don’t know your place.
Step aside, out-the-way. Wipe that look off your face.
‘Cause we are the Divine separated from the swine.
Come on, sing along. Everybody now.

God Given.

And He gives us sight.
And we see the light.
And it burns so bright.
Now we know we’re right.
And His kingdom come.
And Thy will be done.
We have just begun.
We’re the chosen ones.

God Given.

God Given.

Two more punkfiably blasphemous songs are Dead Kennedys “Religious Vomit” and “Moral Majority”

All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That’ll set you free
Just give ‘em all your money and they’ll set you free
Free for a fee

They all claim that they have ‘the Answer’
When they don’t even know the Question
They’re just a bunch of liars
They just want your money
They just want your consciousness

All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That’ll set you free
Just give ‘em all your money and they’ll set you free
Free for a fee

All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That’ll set you free
Just give ‘em all your money and they’ll set you free
Free for a fee

All religions suck
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
All religions make me wanna BLEAH

All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck

They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me ILL

You call yourself the Moral Majority
We call ourselves the people in the real world
Trying to rub us out, but we’re going to survive
God must be dead if you’re alive

You say, ‘God loves you. Come and buy the Good News’
Then you buy the president and swimming pools
If Jesus don’t save ‘til we’re lining your pockets
God must be dead if you’re alive

Circus-tent con-men and Southern belle bunnies
Milk your emotions then they steal your money
It’s the new dark ages with the fascists toting bibles
Cheap nostalgia for the Salem Witch Trials

Stodgy ayatollahs in their dobble-knit ties
Burn lots of books so they can feed you their lies
Masturbating with a flag and a bible
God must be dead if you’re alive

Blow it out your ass, Jerry Falwell
Blow it out your ass, Jesse Helms
Blow it out your ass, Ronald Reagan
What’s wrong with a mind of my own?

You don’t want abortions, you want battered children
You want to ban the pill as if that solves the problem
Now you wanna force us to pray in school
God must be dead if you’re such a fool

You’re planning for a war with or without Iran
Building a police state with the Ku Klux Klan
Pissed at your neighbour? Don’t bother to nag
Pick up the phone and turn in a fag

Blow it out your ass, Terry Dolan
Blow it out your ass, Phyllis Schlafly
Ram it up your cunt, Anita
Cos God must be dead
If you’re alive
God must be dead
If you’re alive

That Jello… now there’s an angry atheist for ya! cheese

Iso, I was wondering when you were going to show up and throw in “God Given.”

Is Morrissey fair game?

How about Angels of Deception by THE THE…here’s the chorus

CHORUS
Jesus Wept. Jesus CHRIST.
I can’t see for the tear gas, & the dollar signs in my eyes.
Well, whats a man got left to fight for
when he’s bought his freedom
by the look of this human jungle
It aint just the poor who’ll be bleeding!

Most everyone round here thinks they’re something special
that destiny will be kind—
While they’re digging for gold, diving for pearls,
& aiming for heaven from this man made world.

Come on down—the devil’s in town
He’s brought you sticks and stones
to bust your neighbors bones,
he’s stuck his missiles in your gardens,
& his theories down your throat—
& god knows what your gonna do with him
Cos I certainly don’t

or Armageddon Days also by The The

They’re 5 miles high as the crow flies
leavin’ vapour trails against a blood red sky
Movin’ in from the East toward the West
with Balaclava helmets over their heads, yes!

But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming
Honey you’ve got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who’s hi-jacked his name
He’ll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

Islam is rising
The Christians mobilising
The world is on its elbows and knees
It’s forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It’s war, she cried, It’s war, she cried, this is war
Drop your possessions, all you simple folk
You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack
You’ll watch the ships out of harbour
and the bodies come floating back

If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today
He’d be gunned down by the C.I.A.
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn’t build himself that throne
God doesn’t live in Israel or Rome
God belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn’t plant the bombs for Hezbollah
God doesn’t even go to church
And God won’t send us down to Allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it’s sown

The world is on its elbows and knees
It’s forgotten the message and worships the creeds
Armageddon days are here again

or The Last Resort by the Eagles

She came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island
where the old world shadows hang heavy in the air.
She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee,
just as her father came across the sea.

She heard about a place people were smilin’,
they spoke about the red man’s way, how they loved the land.
And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide
seeking a place to stand or a place to hide.

Down in the crowded bars out for a good time,
can’t wait to tell you all what it’s like up there.
And they called it paradise, I don’t know why.
Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high.

Then the chilly winds blew down across the desert,
through the canyons of the coast to the Malibu
where the pretty people play hungry for power
to light their neon way and give them things to do.

Some rich man came and raped the land, nobody caught ‘em,
put up a bunch of ugly boxes and, Jesus, people bought ‘em.
And they called it paradise, the place to be,
they watched the hazy sun sinking in the sea.

You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did so many years ago.
They even brought a neon sign ‘Jesus is Coming’,
brought the white man’s burden down, brought the white man’s reign.

Who will provide the grand design, what is yours and what is mine?
‘Cause there is no more new frontier, we have got to make it here.
We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds
in the name of destiny and in the name of God.

And you can see them there on Sunday morning
stand up and sing about what it’s like up there.
They called it paradise, I don’t know why.
You call some place paradise - kiss it goodbye.

...haven’t posted in a while but saw this thread and these three songs came right to me…oooh now I need to go listen to The Last Resort.

Nice additions Cara and J!

How about…

Heresy-Nine Inch Nails

Blasphemous Rumours- Depeche Mode

Christian Woman-Type O Negative

“Nothing” - Depeche Mode

J, are you going to throw Stipe in the mix?

I know these are old. Surely someone will pitch in some new songs.

I’ll try to think of some more. For now I must pay homage to Santa so I can get gifts once per year.

Can’t help myself - help me belt it out, Iso!

Minority, by Green Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-HTRKlU1EY

I wanna be the minority
I don’t need your authority
Down with the moral majority
‘Cause I wanna be the minority

I pledge allegiance to the underworld
One nation under dog
There of which I stand alone
A face in the crowd
Unsung, against the mold
Without a doubt
Singled out
The only way I know

‘Cause I want to be the minority
I don’t need your authority
Down with the moral majority
‘Cause I want to be the minority

Stepped out of the line
Like a sheep runs from the herd
Marching out of time
To my own beat now
The only way I know

One light, one mind
Flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
“For crying out loud” she screamed unto me
A free for all
Fuck ‘em all
You are your own sight,

‘Cause I want to be the minority
I don’t need your authority
Down with the moral majority
‘Cause I want to be the minority

Jeez, I love Green Day.
