How? I have so many friends buying into this crap. It was really picking up steam when it was a viral internet sensation, but now that the mainstream media is whoring it out I have noticed people back tracking downplaying their expectations. It reminds me of that Documentary “Doomsday Cult” or the Y2K scare.
It is such a perfect example of how people think wrong and look for evidence in the wrong places and ignore anything contrary to what they want.
I guess what bothers me is non religious people wanting the world to end.
Anyone else know any people buying into this load?
We have a few more years for it to reach critical mass. I think most people underestimate how seriously this will be taken, and how much damage it can do.
Sex may sell; but, fear motivates. You must warn people that their children are in danger if you want them to watch the evening news. Their are too many jobs at risk in the entertainment/news industry to let something like mature, rational thought stand in the way of ratings.

My advice, free of charge as always, is to stop watching the evening news: you will learn something.
Stop watching TV altogether and your quality of life will improve significantly.

This is actually the first I’ve heard about this 2012 thing. Maybe it’s because ever since TV went digital on 2/17, I haven’t watched any (my converter does a piss-poor job on my old TV).
I did some googling. I found the site for the movie as well as the Institute for Human Continuity website, which is all in Flash (prevents easy copying/pasting). They base the end of the world on the Mayan prediction, apparently, yet buttress their credibility with alleged scientific specialists, names that, when googled, were linked only to IHC and no other institutions.

Yeah the movie is trying to hype it up. If you want a good review of all the idiotic ideas check out the 2012 (not the film) wiki page. Its pretty funny how in one paragraph they describe what each different group of people thinks and discount it too.

I think people should be concerned about their neighbors believing the world is ending. Do you have doubts that this could easily sway an election in the United States? Do you doubt the compatibility of this increasingly popular EotW belief with the religious beliefs of our world?
