For those of us who thought nukes were the most angst-invoking thing we bad monkeys could come up with, today there is the potential to create fun pyrotechnic devices to let off in our collective back yards that would make Tsar Bomba (world’s biggest nuke ever set off) look like a firecracker.
-
As you’ve no doubt heard, scientists have finally managed to contain bits of antimatter. As they get better at it, the amounts will of course increase.
-
It’s not like antimatter is anything new. Scientists have been playing with it in one form or another for a long time. The anti-neutrino was “discovered” in 1956, the year I was born, for example.
-
What IS new is the long-sought-after knowledge leading to the ability to contain antimatter in any sort of quantity. Which comes with certain . . . er . . . risks. Unless, of course, those risks are what you’re after . . .
-
The inevitable militarisation of antimatter (I say “inevitable” because they’re greedily leaning over the scientists’ shoulders, watching this new-found progress with great interest) is leading, of course, to things that go “BOOM!”
-
Yes, an antimatter bomb isn’t far off. And just think- a bit of antimatter the size of the nail of your little finger is all it would take to equal the explosive force of Tsar Bomba. And- this is what the military types are so keen on- antimatter explosions can be rigged to be extremely “clean”. Lots of FLASH, BOOM and VAPORISATION without the nasty fallout that accompanies things that go boom of the nuclear variety.
-
Here’s a little reminder of what Tsar Bomba did:

And again, a bit of antimatter the size or your little fingernail would result in an explosion of this size.
-
Now, imagine an antimatter bomb of the size of Tsar Bomba. Tsar Bomba was capable of vaporising entire cities. The antimatter variety would be capable of vaporising entire troublesome countries where the bad monkeys live.

It would be great if we could weaponize this since nukes are basically unusable.

Sometimes you have to kill people, and possibly a lot of people just because people are, as you said, bad monkeys.

Sorry.
