The government must show a strong reason why regulations outweigh religious freedoms, he said. Building officials argue permits and codes ensure structural safety, but Amish homes aren’t falling down, he said.

“People aren’t getting hurt,” he said.

Of course, the Amish tend to build much stouter buildings than required by code.

This is a case of the government actually showing some reasonable discernment and restraint rather than taking the far more harmful “no tolerance” attitude.

Civil construction code would wilt and die under the scrutiny of traditional Amish post & beam construction.

If it is true that the amish are such great builders
they shouldn’t have any problem complying with
the local building code.

Us ordinary “English” (non amish) have to go by the code.
