There’s another analogous thread in this subforum where there are some good replies in one sentence as to why one is an atheist.
I’d like to know the same for theists.
I was raised a theist (Russian Orthodox Christian) so I’ll go first: I was a theist because my parents brought me up with the belief

It’s the ultimate goal of spiritual practice or mysticism (the essence of true religion).
The present meaning of the term mysticism arose via Platonism and Neoplatonism—which referred to the Eleusinian initiation as a metaphor for the “initiation” to spiritual truths and experiences—and is the pursuit of communion with, identity with, or conscious awareness of an ultimate reality, divinity, spiritual truth, or God through direct experience, intuition, instinct or insight.

What is the nature of the entity that seeks and becomes enlightened?
Does it morph into something bigger or grander?
Does it lose its personal identity after it becomes enlightened?
Is its new awareness eternal?
Or is just a temporary thing?
Is enlightenment a subjective experience?
