Agreed. Europeans have much to learn from us when it comes to free speech issues. This is absurd.
Not to derail this thread, and as much as I do hate when people try to stifle free speech. Surely you are not attempting to speak on behalf of over 600 million people are you?
I surely would not suggest that a prosecutor does either so lets be careful before saying “europeans” have much to learn about free speech issues.
Such a prosecution would not take place in the USA, where we actually believe in freedom of speech.
To tie in with the above, sadly I do think that these things are more common here, I don’t think because there is any less tradition of free speech here, the only difference is that your legal work to protect free speech is a lot harder to unroot.
I meet and talk to lots of morons here in Europe who do think that its okay to decide what speech is okay and not, but make no mistake about it. I could easily find as many americans thinking the same. Whether it be throwing people out of baseball stadiums for not standing during a patriotic song or in the way your FDA censors television.
Well on a non defensive note though, I’m not suprised. Religious people, and people of all other opinions constantly try to demand that society protects them from being offended.
I’ll wait though with making too much out of this, as far as I can read the article is about a prosectution. People prosecute for all kinds of dumb shit all the time and there is little point wasting letters on it until there has actually been a verdict.
If this fellow would be convicted, then it will be a sad day for the Netherlands, and a grave mistake by the people who support this line.
That said, I really do prefer if you do not automatically group me and every other sane person over here with these fucktards in such a vast generalization.
