The Maine Senate just passed a gay marriage bill 20-15—and rejected an amendment that would automatically put it up for referendum in the fall.
We’ll probably be next!

The Maine Legislature has approved a bill that would make the state the fifth to allow gay marriage.

The House gave approval Tuesday after rejecting a proposal to let voters decide the issue in November.

Gov Baldacci just signed gay marriage into law in Maine!
It takes effect in 90 days*.
The devout are gearing up for the fight to put it to referendum, but I don’t believe they have much fight left in them anymore.
We’ll see.

*Correction: it takes effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns on June 17th.
