Zionism and Truth

If Zionism could have been honest it would have said, in public, after the Nazi holocaust and Israel’s unilateral declaration of independence in 1948, something like the following… Jews can never again trust Gentiles. We take it as a given that Jews will always be hated and that the monster of anti-Semitism will go on the rampage again. The Zionist state exists to be the refuge of last resort for Jews everywhere and is thus an insurance policy to guarantee the survival of the Jewish people. We will do whatever it takes to maintain this guarantee, and if what we do causes our state to be regarded as a pariah by the rest of the world, well, the rest of the world can go to hell.

This truth could not be told because telling it would have been to admit, even to proclaim, that Zionism had no time or need for, and was estranged from, the moral principles and teachings of Judaism.

Unable to tell the truth, Zionism had to tell a lie to justify its actions. The lie was that Israel - a Zionist state NOT a Jewish state - was in constant danger of annihilation. Except in Arab rhetoric, it never was. Not in 1948. Not in 1967. And not in 1973.

According to the first and still existing draft of Judeo-Christian history, Israel went to war in 1967 either because the Arabs attacked first or were intending to attack. The truth is that this was a war of Israeli aggression, not self-defense. Avi Shlaim was both right and wrong when he wrote in The Iron Wall that Israel did not go to war to take territory. The government of Israel headed by Prime Minister Eshkol with Rabin as chief of staff, did NOT; but Defense Minister Dayan, imposed upon Eshkol at the last minute in something close to a military coup, DID. The truth is that Dayan set a trap for Nasser and, for reasons of face, he was daft enough to walk into it. For Dayan the war of 1967 was about the creation of Greater Israel, Zionism’s unfinished business of 1948.

Part of the untold truth (revealed in my book) is that the Arab regimes and elites secretly shared the hope of Zionism and the major powers - that there would not be a regeneration of Palestinian nationalism after the Palestine file had been closed by Israel’s victory on the battlefield in 1948. The Palestine file was supposed to have remained closed for ever because, if it was re-opened, there would at some point have to be a confrontation with Zionism - i.e. if the major powers were not to have to admit that there was nothing they would or could do to right the terrible wrong done to the Palestinians; and if the Arab regimes were not to be exposed as all the things they are - impotent and incompetent on account of their divisions, and corrupt and repressive.
So far as Zionism, the major powers and Arab regimes and elites were concerned but could never say, Arafat’s real crime was that he caused the Palestine file to be re-opened.

WHY THE JEWISH SILENCE?

As some courageous anti-Zionist Jews and Israelis have said, mainstream diaspora Jewish silence on the matter of the Zionist state’s behaviour is, effectively, “complicity” in its crimes and its preference for land without peace. So why the silence?

As noted in the updated Acknowledgments of my book, the main reason is fear of the future and thus the perceived need, perhaps, one day, for Israel as a refuge of last resort. I write that, because of the past, mainstream diaspora Jews are so fearful of the future - unspeakably terrified not just frightened - that they are frozen in silence, unable more than unwilling to criticise Israel. They fear that if they do, they could undermine the wellbeing and security of Israel as their insurance policy. Effectively, silence on the matter of the Zionist state’s behaviour is the diaspora’s contribution (at least as important as the money) to the maintenance of the insurance policy.

The tragedy is that the Zionist state’s behaviour has re-awakened the sleeping giant of anti-Semitism, and by their silence and complicity mainstream diaspora Jews are assisting Zionism to become a self-fulfilling prophesy of doom. They are also standing idly by while Zionism demolishes the moral foundations of Judaism.

Is there a way to encourage mainstream diaspora Jews to end their silence? (And play their necessary and essential part in persuading Israel to make peace on the basis of a genuine two-state solution, a proposition almost all Palestinians and most other Arabs accepted many years ago, mainly because of Arafat’s pragmatism and courage). The only possible way I can see is with the assistance of a NEW COVENANT, not between the Jews and their God but between the Jews and the Gentiles. The Origin of the Palestine-Israel Conflict.

For 2,000 years there was no such conflict.

The land of Palestine was inhabited by Palestinian Arabs. In 1850 these consisted of approximately 400,000 Muslims, 75,000 Christians, and 25,000 Jews. For centuries these groups had lived in harmony: 80 percent Muslim, 15 percent Christian, 5 percent Jewish.

Zionism
But then in the late 1800s a group in Europe decided to colonize this land. Known as “Zionists,” this group consisted of an extremist minority of the world Jewish population. They wanted to create a Jewish homeland, and at first considered locations in Africa and South America, (they were actually awarded 6,000 miles of land in Uganda but declined) before finally settling on Palestine for their colony.

At first this immigration created no problems. However, as more and more Zionists immigrated to Palestine — many with the express wish of taking over the land for an exclusively Jewish state — the indigenous population became increasingly alarmed. Eventually, there was fighting between the two groups, with escalating waves of violence.

Finally, in 1947 the United Nations decided to intervene. However, rather than adhering to the democratic principle espoused decades earlier by Woodrow Wilson of “self-determination of peoples,” in which the people themselves create their own state and system of government, the UN chose to revert to the medieval strategy whereby an outside power arbitrarily divides up other people’s land.

Under considerable pressure from high-placed American Zionists, the UN decided to give away 55 percent of Palestine to a Jewish state — despite the fact that this group represented only about 30 percent of the total population, and owned under 7 percent of the land.

1948 War
When the inevitable war broke out the outcome was never in doubt, according to U.S. intelligence reports from the time. The Zionist army consisted of over 90,000 European-trained soldiers and possessed modern weaponry, including up-to-date fighter and bomber airplanes. The Arab forces, very much a third-world army, consisted of approximately 30,000 ill-equipped, poorly trained men. The U.S. Army, British intelligence, and the CIA all agreed: it would be no contest.

By the end of the 1948 war the Jewish state — having now declared itself “Israel” — had conquered 78 percent of Palestine — far more than that proposed even by the very generous UN partition plan. And three-quarters of a million Palestinians had been made refugees. Over 400 towns and villages had been destroyed, and a new map was being drawn up, in which every city, river and hillock would receive a new, Hebrew name. All vestiges of the Palestinian culture were to be erased. In fact, for many decades Israel — and the US, following its lead — denied the very existence of this population. Golda Meir once said, in fact: “There is no such thing as a Palestinian.”

1967 War
In 1967, Israel conquered still more land. Following the Six Day War, in which Israeli forces launched a highly successful, Pearl Harbor-like surprise attack on Egypt, Israel occupied the additional 22 percent of Palestine that had eluded it in 1948 — the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It also occupied parts of Egypt (which since were returned) and Syria (which remain under occupation).

Current Conflict
There are, then, two issues at the very core of the continuing conflict and escalating violence in the Middle East:

First, there is the inevitably destabilizing effect of trying to maintain an ethnically preferential state, particularly when the exclusionist entity is of largely colonial origin. As we have seen, the original population of what is now Israel was 95 percent Muslim and Christian. And yet, Muslim and Christian refugees are not being allowed to return to their homes in the current “Jewish state.” Israeli peace negotiators refuse to even discuss the possibility of applying this UN guaranteed right.

Second, Israel’s continued confiscation of Palestinian land in the West Bank and Gaza is being resisted by the Palestinian inhabitants. It is these occupied territories that, according to the Oslo peace accords of 1993, were going to become a Palestinian state. However, when Israel continued to take land in these areas and to move its citizens onto it, the Palestinian population rebelled. This uprising, called the “Intifada” (Arabic for “shaking off”) began at the end of September 2000 and continues to this day.

Orthodox Jews Demand End to Zionist Atrocities in the Middle East

The brutal and indiscriminate attack upon the people and infrastructure of Lebanon by the Zionist State “Israel” is a crime against all basic standards of decency and humanity.

The excuse given for this murderous invasion was the attack by Hezbollah on the IDF. What this might have to do with the hundreds of thousands of Lebanese innocent men, women and children, who are subjected to an ongoing living hell, is beyond comprehension.

Indeed, this current aggression is only the second chapter of the recent viciousness; the first being the furious reinvasion of Gaza and the onslaught on its civilians and the ruination of its basic human services.

Of course, voices may be heard that the IDF are simply responding. This, of course, ignores the question of the evil, implicit in punishing blameless people for the deeds of others. And it totally ignores the root of the problem, the dispossession and subjugation of the Palestinian people which began in 1948, was expanded in 1967 and continues unabated to this day. The crux of the matter is that beyond the immorality of the Zionist treatment of the Palestinians is the ultimate fact—the ideology of Zionism and ensuing establishment of the Zionist state conflicts with the basic teachings of Judaism.

Zionism is the transformation from Judaism, a G-dliness and spirituality, into a G-dlessness, materialism with nationalistic aspirations. Theodor Herzl and his cohorts, the fathers of this relatively new ideology of Zionism (approximately 100 years), have taken the Almighty out of the equation.

The ultimate establishment of the Zionist State, the fulfilment of the Zionist ideology, takes this blasphemy a step further. The Jewish people were sent into exile by Divine decree. They where then expressly commanded by the Almighty, not to attempt to leave their exilic existence through any human intervention. They were expressly forbidden to create their own state, such as the Zionist state of “Israel”. (Talmud, Tractate Kesuboth, p.111).

The Jewish people are forbidden to oppress another people. The creation of the State of “Israel” came about through, the theft from, subjugation and oppression of, the Palestinian people.

Torah Jewry, therefore, condemns the horrifying suffering inflicted upon both the Palestinian and Lebanese people. Because of all of the above, all attempts to achieve peace and stability for “Israel” are destined to fail. The Creator cannot be defied with impunity.

The Rabbis stated, that the State of “Israel” will result in unending pain, suffering and bloodshed. May the Almighty protect His creations.

The State of “Israel” does not speak in the name of Jews, they have stolen the name “Israel” from the Jewish people. Jews are commanded to be loyal citizens in every country in which they reside.

Zionism and the State of “Israel”, is the main cause of the exacerbation of anti Semitism universally.

The government of the illegitimate State of “Israel”, continually attempts to uproot the Torah and its statutes. They persistently oppress the Torah true Jews who reside in its borders.

We pray that all misery in the Holy Land and Lebanon, shall come to an end and that Zionism, the root of the suffering, continue to fade from Jewish consciousness, to be replaced by the faith of Torah. We shall all witness soon the peaceful dismantlement of the Zionist State “Israel”. May we merit seeing the day when all humanity will serve the Almighty in harmony and peace. Amen.
