Why are they indulging in books—Daniel Dennett’s ‘‘Breaking the Spell,’’ Sam Harris’s ‘‘Letter to a Christian Nation,’’ and Richard Dawkins’s ‘‘God Delusion’’—in which authors lampoon religion or rail against the devout under the banner of a crusading atheism?
