Beyond Belief: Candles in the Dark is the third in an annual series of conversations: an ongoing project to foster and promote the use of reason in formulating social policy. This year, we asked participants to propose a Candle—a potential solution to a problem that they have identified in their area of expertise or informed passion.
The Four Horsemen

On the 30th of September 2007, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens sat down for an unmoderated 2-hour discussion, convened by The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science and filmed by Josh Timonen. In this conversation the group trades stories of the public’s reaction to their recent books, their unexpected successes, criticisms and common misrepresentations. They discuss the tough questions about religion that face the world today and propose new strategies for going forward.
While the entire video can be viewed on the internet, a high definition DVD is also available. All profits from the sale of the DVD go the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust. The DVD can be ordered here.

Atheists Battle Against Religion

This week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case brought by a group of atheists who claim the Bush administration’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives violates the separation of church and state. It’s just one example of how atheists are becoming increasingly assertive — arguing not only that religion is false, but also a threat to civilization.
