Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism Jacoby, S.

This is a superb historical overview of America’s secularist heritage, a heritage that eulogizes human reason and intelligent thought and analysis while highlighting weaknesses of and secularist conflicts with faith-based claims and rigid ideologies. It highlights rationalist and enlightenment contributions to various American advancements from our 18th Century Constitution to 19th Century abolitionism and suffragism to 20th Century civil rights, labor, and feminist movements. Ms. Jacoby’s writing style is lucid, informative, interesting, and convincing—her research and breadth of knowledge, extensive. The book includes an excellent bibliography and research notes.
