French Lessons Kaplan, A. October 15, 1994

This is one of the best memoirs I’ve ever read.  Alice Kaplan deftly combines personal, political and historical issues.  She draws on her academic specialty - the literature of French fascism - to describe a chilling confrontation with a Vichy era French fascist in which she ultimately is triumphant - due to the sheer force of her prodigious intellect and humanistic values.
