Half the Sky:  Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide Kristof, Nicholas D. & WuDunn, Sherly Knopf; 1 edition (September 8, 2009)

There are some books that inform; then there are some books that transform.  This is such a book.  The stories of these women are both horrifying and inspiring.  The statistics are staggering.  This book discusses what has shown to work and what has not, and why.  Having read this book, I feel moved to help however I can.  This book covers human trafficking and forced prostitution, maternal mortality, and gender-based violence.  I’m not a literary critic, but what I can tell from my general reading is that this book is secular and focuses on the issues at hand and does not look to feed into some other agenda as well.

Some of the stories in this book are very graphic.  But if you can stomach to read through the horrors that millions of girls and women face every day, you will also be inspired by those who dedicate their lives to make change.
