Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain Wolf, M. 2008

I highly recommend this book for people who have an interest in the evolution of writing and language. Proust and the Squid gives the reader a fascinating look at the origin of the reading brain, while combining aspects of education, psychology, neuroscience, history, archeology, and linguistics.  It begins with how the brain learned to read and ends with genetics that are able to give some of us “gifts” or a diagnosis of dyslexia.

The book is quite scholarly throughout, which may be difficult for the average layperson, but it’s an extremely worthwhile read.
