Questioning the Veil:  Open Letters to Muslim Women Lazreg, M. March 20, 2011

Marnia Lazreg is a professor of sociology.  Her open letters in this book constitute a critique of the hijab that is grounded in Prof. Lazreg’s own experiences of growing up Muslim in Algeria.
She therefore speaks with an insider’s authority on this issue, eschewing the far right chauvinism of American anti-Muslim conservatives that has far too often cheapened the level of public discourse on issues of gender in Islam.
