The Whys of a Philosophical Scrivener Gardner, M. St. Martin's Griffin; 2nd edition (August 21, 1999)

A very unusual approach to the enduring philosophical themes. Clearly separated into chapters that each address one “Why” explaining the broad history of a key question, with Gardner’s personal conclusions or inclinations as to the answers. Examples:

The World: Why I Am Not a Solipsist
Truth: Why I Am Not a Pragmatist
Beauty: Why I Am Not an Esthetic Relativist
Goodness: Why I Am Not an Ethical Relativist
Faith: Why I Am Not an Atheist

Even though I end up disagreeing with Garner on many of these questions, his discussion of their essentials and his explanation of his own inclinations/conclusions are excellent food for thought, accessible to lay readers.
