Toward the Light of Liberty: The Struggles for Freedom and Rights That Made the Modern Western World Grayling, A.C. Walker & Company; 1st edition (October 2, 2007)

A. C. Grayling’s “Toward the Light of Liberty: The Struggles for Freedom and Rights That Made the Modern Western World” is an excellent short history of Western rights. Grayling recounts the major episodes in the history of the West that crystallized the need for rights: freedom of conscience, freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, and the right to petition for redress of grieveances against the government. Grayling then goes on to worry if the current era of freedom is over and how to go about defending it.
