Faith is the belief that everything that is happening is happening for the best.  Plain and simple.  It is this idea that people are referring to when they refer to a concept like God.  People abstract this concept in very peculiar ways, such as a man who sits in judgement over all of existence with perfect discernment.  When someone adopts the view of faith, it becomes quite the mystery why we have the experiences we have.  Of course, without faith it becomes quite the mystery why we have the experiences that we have.

That sounds like yet another reformulation of a silly notion put forth by Leibniz, which was effectively shot down by Voltaire in the mid-18th century. It is virtually self-evident that things do not always happen for the best, and yet, continue to try and argue this.

If you read my post, I didn’t take the position one way or the other, I simply asserted what faith is and said that if you adopt this view it’s a tremendous mystery why things happen the way that they do and if you don’t adopt this view it’s still a tremendous mystery why things happen the way that they do.

Personally, I think that a better definition of faith would be the ability to accept stupid ideas on bad evidence, but, to each his own, I suppose.  Would it be fair to say that what you actually said was ’ Sometimes things happen to people that they don’t understand. ’ ? If so, that’s hardly a startling revelation. Or maybe, faith adds nothing to a person’s ability to understand situations? I’m having a little trouble finding a point in what you said, if it isn’t that we are livng in the best of all possible worlds, but, it could be that I am missing something. If you could expound on that, it would be very helpful.

Faith is knowing ourselves well .... then, we will know the way out - “Life will find the way”.

That may be the definition that some people try to put forth when pressed into a corner, and need something vague enough to be void of any actual content, but, it most certainly is not the definition people have in mind when they say ‘He’s a man of faith.’ or ’ That is contrary to my faith.’.

I basically agree with this.

We all need faith to survive, faith that what we eat,  drugs that we take, cars that we drive, and all the other chances we take, won’t let us down.

Perhaps we need a different word for “faith” when a belief is held about imaginary things.
How about combining the word “faith” and “hope” into fope for things like god and angels?

I would think this is more “risk acceptance” than faith.

I disagree,Faith is the word that explains why people go blindly and believe something that you can’t see, thus unproven,it is the other term for hope that they wish for something to be true that drives them to do something increasing their property to do either wrong or right, which is also undefined.

Faith is belief without reason.

Having *faith* that an idea is true, means that one *believes* it is true but without reasons.

Instead, one should only believe an idea if he has no criticisms of that idea.

Faith is a belief in the highly improbable despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

It is much like “wishful thinking” or “praying” for material results

Examples are belief in:

1.) Virgin Birth
2.) Rising fom the dead.
3.) Noahs Ark
4.) 6,000 year old world

etc. etc. Highly improbable occurrences with no evidence for and overwhelming evidence to the contrary
