Mr. Harris' book tour took him to NPR's Talk of the Nation on 10/2. In response to a request for an example of a more appropriate societal model, he suggested the (secularized) countries of Western Europe. I found it ironic that the Deutsche Welle site on 10/3 had a feature called "No Brakes on Germany's Population Freefall". (http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,2138258,00.html). The number for Germany's (2004) birth rate was 1.37 vs the 2.1 required to maintain a stable population level.
I submit that what amounts to a last grand gesture of defiance may be "noble" in some eyes, but the numbers don't support a future.
