Which song do you think is best at promoting peace and harmony among all sentient beings on Earth regardless of race, religion, belief, language, creed, class, status, wealth ?? Why?

“Imagine” - John Lennon

As to why, the song is known world-wide and is sung in the default international language of English.

There are numerous compelling religious songs about peace, but they are inherently inferior to secular songs in that they are unapproachable to other faiths and cultures.

There are numerous secular songs about peace, but I don’t think any have reached as far and bit so deep as Imagine.  Lennon was a Beatle, after all, and nobody doubted his sincerity.

As for the rest of the homework, forgive me if I decline.

“Imagine” - John Lennon

From a secular standpoint, it is hard to argue with you. But given your name and your obvious affinity to Mozart, I’m surprised you didn’t choose “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” (yes, I am aware that he wasn’t the original composer).

For the record, I don’t like “Imagine” as a song, or as a paradigm.  I was just trying to answer the question.

Art mirrors society, it doesn’t create it.  Sometimes, however, society doesn’t like what it sees in the mirror that art provides.  Then the art resonates.  Regardless of whether you agree with Mr. Lennon’s sentiments, his song resonated more than any other.

The causes of human conflict cannot be sung away, but a catchy song can be an effective medium for spreading an idea.

Edit: Replying to Bruce, of course, but I’m more than willing to accept Tom Waits as the next Messiah.

In answer to your question, sgxbroker:

U2 Lyrics - One

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say…

One love
One life
When it’s one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don’t care for it

Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it’s…

Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We’re one, but we’re not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One…
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it’s all I got
We’re one
But we’re not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we’re not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

One…life

One

We can promote peace by sterilizing everyone who is not moved by this.
That ought to clean up the gene pool.

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5 2nd Movement “Emperor”

Or Mozart’s Canzonetta sull’aria …still the only thing that can still make me wonder if there really is a God…

isocratic infidel, I think it is Bono’s heartfelt crooning that completes the feeling of this song.

“What a Wonderful World” (Louis Armstrong; not Sam Cooke)

Despite all the awful things that sometimes happen; it’s still worth keeping.

You’re all wrong.  I’m gonna go with “Do You Realize?” by the Flaming Lips.  I consider it the unofficial atheist theme song and I still have trouble listening to it without getting choked up.

“Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize we’re floating in space?
Do you realize that happiness makes you cry?
Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?

But instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast,
It’s hard to make the good things last,
You realize the sun doesn’t go down
It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning ‘round.”

I just must add “god” by John Lennon.

God is a Concept by which
we measure our pain
I’ll say it again
God is a Concept by which
we measure our pain
I don’t believe in magic
I don’t believe in I-ching
I don’t believe in Bible
I don’t believe in Tarot
I don’t believe in Hitler
I don’t believe in Jesus
I don’t believe in Kennedy
I don’t believe in Buddha
I don’t believe in Mantra
I don’t believe in Gita
I don’t believe in Yoga
I don’t believe in Kings
I don’t believe in Elvis
I don’t believe in Zimmerman
I don’t believe in Beatles
I just believe in me…and that’s reality

The dream is over
What can I say?
the Dream is Over
Yesterday
I was the Dream weaver
But now I’m reborn
I was the Walrus
But now I’m John
and so dear friends
you’ll just have to carry on
The Dream is over

Hey Beam-Me-Up, I can’t help but notice that you omitted the “Yoko and me” bit between “I just believe in me” and “And that’s reality”.  Was this a personal choice?

Perhaps that was a Freudian slip.  oh oh

I apologize for the omission.

No need to apologize.  After all, she did destroy the Beatles and her own music caused great suffering the world over.

My ears suffered.  But she did help John to get clean.
