Dear Mods,
I have a rather odd request: Is it alright to share the story of my cousin’s son (an incredibly bright, funny, talented and pretty dog-gone good-lookin’ 22-year-old) who was recently paralyzed by a gunshot wound after being robbed by three thugs and provide info for an account made in his name, created to aid in funding for stem cell research at the University of Utah’s medical centre? While many in the family sit and pray, HE understands that science is his best bet, and I really want to help him in a tangible way… well, that and show his family the “power” of secular empathy.
Your prompt response would be appreciated, as the sooner the better for his type of injury.
Thanks!

Isocratic, please accept my sympathy for this tragedy in your family . When I hear about something like this I not only realize how hard it is to believe in “God” , but lose faith in mankind too . I wish I could give more than my condolences, but I can’t. I hope this project you have in mind does well.

Thanks Dee. Your sympathy is accepted and appreciated.
I know everyone is strapped for cash these days… I just thought five bucks here and there could help him out of the chair he’s currently strapped to…
His attitude and personality is quite inspiring…
I feel so helpless to help him…
It sucks.

So… any mods out there? I just didn’t want to assume it was okay unless it is okay…

J., though I’m not a moderator, most of them no longer visit this site. They were originally assembled to combat spam. Even so, I can’t imagine that any of them would consider your obviously genuine request to be something resembling spam. Please call or e-mail me sometime if you’d like. I hope your cousin’s son remains in good spirits and is relatively pain-free, and it sounds as if that’s the case.

Best always

Thanks D and Bruce.  You guys are awesome and I sincerely appreciate your responding and genuine concern. It really does bring comfort and hope… and triggers my erector pili (goosebumps).
When I called his mom today she was with him at the U of U medical centre for rehab. and she said the positive energy of the staff and other specialists is palpable. He is doing his own research into the stem cell treatments that appear to have good success rates. He truly is amazing in that he makes all visitors feel at ease and makes no allowance for pity parties. There has been little change since he left AZ for Utah, but he says that there have been times that he can feel heat when someone is rubbing his legs and slight cold when someone puts something cold in his lap. (We don’t know if this is a trick of the mind or actual evidence that the nerves are healing, he thinks it’s the latter. I do hope he’s right.)
His mom, Stephanie, just gave me the account number so I’ll post it here and again in the General Discussion forum with a pic of Preston as soon as she sends it, and a fuller version of what happened. Many thanks and much gratitude in advance to all who can spare a few bucks.  cool smile
It’s a Wells Fargo account in the form of a trust fund for Preston Maurer: #8174252000

*I would like to ask any who do contribute to PM me so that Steph and Todd (his dad and my cousin) and Preston can pass on her gratitude in her own fashion. Thanks again all you wonderful human beings on the Sam Harris Forum… I love ya, one and all. (even the ones I take to task and/or possibly offend.)

J, I have not noticed this thread before today. I normally never check this area. I would guess that very few posters have read this thread yet.

Please let me offer my sincere sympathies to your family and to Preston. No pity party intended. Some of the most inspirational people I have ever met where either victims of a terrible tragedy or they were dying of some incurable malady.

Is there an address where I can send a donation or do I have to wire money directly to Wells Fargo?

Scotty

Thanks Scotty.
I’m glad you found it. I deliberately put it here first because I didn’t want to do anything that would be, well, not kosher. (Evidently, even the mods never check this area either!)

I’m still waiting for Steph to send me a photo, so I can put it in a more ‘peeked upon’ forum thread. Just a little more info: Preston is the first male on my mother’s side of the family (not including my younger brother) to bravely refuse to go on a mormon mission. This may sound like no biggy to those not familiar with the religion, but I guarantee, this is not a easy thing for a young male brought up in the religion to get out of doing.
But as I said above, he is doing his part mentally and emotionally to stay strong, maintaining a sense of humor, doing his rehab and his homework, and has much hope in the “miracles” of medical science.

As far as I know, wiring directly to Well Fargo is the way to go… but if you feel uncomfortable with that, PM me and I’ll give you Steph’s phone number so she can give you their address. Thank yo so much in advance Scott. I know how tough times are financially for everyone these days, so it is especially meaningful. And I assure you, it will all go toward his treatment(s).

As before: *I would like to ask any who do contribute to PM me so that Steph and Todd (his dad and my cousin) and Preston can pass on her gratitude in her own fashion. Thanks again all you wonderful human beings on the Sam Harris Forum… I love ya, one and all. (even the ones I take to task and/or possibly offend.)

No gratitude wanted or needed. I prefer anonymity in such matters. If the time is ever right, please remind Preston that perps come in all colors and flavors. The color of the idiots who did this horrible thing to him does not justify racism. Good deeds also come from all races and creeds. Hate begets hate. My heart goes out to him. I know that it is much easier to generalize when you have been wronged. I am not trying to judge him in any way. I have fortunately only been the victim of comparatively minor infractions.

He’s aware of this.  I’m quite sure his anger, which he expresses via humor, is only temporary… of course, it doesn’t help that his grandpappy has always been a bigot. I think he’s having some difficulty mainly because when they first called out to him, he only stopped because he thought they needed help. And then the one guys got out of the vehicle and robbed him at gunpoint, and then the one of the other guys in the vehicle shot him in the back whilst trying to defend himself.
Maybe it’s me who’s having difficulty forgiving and making generalizations…  I’ve always been a big supporter/defender of the hispanics in this community… of late, however, in AZ., tensions are high (thanks to Sheriff Joe) and it seems more and more individuals in the latino community are shooting innocents and then justifying it by calling everyone else a racist.  confused
Don’t worry, Beam… I’ll be fine once they catch the thugs.

That is all terribly tragic. I am honestly moved by your family’s horrific misfortune.

I have their address now, (I talked to Steph and he’s remaining positive, working hard and isn’t bitter at all—I guess it’s only me who is—wah-wah-wah) so anyone who prefers that to the wiring to Wells Fargo, just PM me.
Merci.

That sort of reaction happened to me around 1986 when I was robbed at knife point late at night just outside Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. It took a year or two before my reaction to the skin color played itself out. That’s not racism as it’s commonly defined, but visceral reaction requiring time to mentally heal.

Thanks D. But the Beamer was correct to call me out on the mean thoughts I’ve been having… All Preston did was joke about how they knew enough english to say, “Give me your backpack.” And there was random spanglish about getting a cell phone, that he didn’t have. He holds no grudge. It’s me. When you spend you life, thus far as I have, defending other races and learning to speak spanish, volunteering to help them learn english for their benefit and signing petitions etc. it pisses me off. (My first husband and the father of my first child was part chicano—part spanish, part american indian—and half german, but looked like his father’s side, and dealt with the blatant racism in jr. high and high school by calling himself a spic. Sad huh?)
I know they’re just criminal minds who thought he had more than them, but he didn’t! Your story and understanding are helpful. Thanks bud.
... and I’m glad you came out of your experience alive and healed.

I just noticed this thread too.

That’s correct. Many members offered to help combat the spam before the new board was put in its place that now automatically controls it. It certainly would have been OK to put this thread in General Discussion, especially since you, isocratic, are a regular here.

And my sympathies to your cousin. What a horrible thing! Keep us informed of his progress.

Gracias, rab. You rock.
I’m still waiting for his mom to send a photo and then I will put it in the Gen Discussion forum thread as well.
